Every creature needs food to support their growing bodies and keep them healthy into adulthood. You may have read our blog post about whether you should give your Samoyed a raw or dry food diet. That has you thinking, what should your Sammy eat when they’re puppies, adults, and seniors?

The diet of your Samoyed will depend on their age. For instance:

•  Samoyed puppies should start with their mother’s milk before graduating to solid puppy food like kibble, typically at four weeks old

• Adult Samoyeds can eat either raw or dry food diet; a raw diet includes dairy, eggs, vegetables, fruits, bones, and meat while a dry diet encompasses commercial dog food

•  Senior Samoyeds need a diet that often has extra nutrients, protein, or fiber to support their aging bodies and reduce pain

When my dog Middle was a puppy, we had her on the raw diet. Then we had our son, Casper, and decided to move away from the raw diet. Mostly, I was concerned about bacteria spreading to my son from all the raw food in the house. Today, Middle likes Acana dog food.

In this article, I’ll share some of my other dog food picks for puppies, adults, and senior Samoyeds, all courtesy of Amazonif you buy though these affliate link, we could get a little commission, thank you in advance). This way, no matter the age of your precious pup, you have something you can feed them. For the sake of this article, I won’t feature any raw food, but that doesn’t mean I discourage giving your dog raw food. It can be good for them. You just can’t get it in a bag. The real deal comes from the grocery store and other sources.

Let’s get started!

The Best Dog Food for Samoyed Puppies

Got a hungry Sammy puppy on your hands? I quite like the following foods, and I think you will, too.

Purina ONE SmartBlend Healthy Puppy Premium Formula

The SmartBlend puppy food from Purina ONE is like a raw diet for your puppy, but without any of the risks (such as bacteria or them choking on a bone). This premium formula includes a blend of dual-defense antioxidants that can boost your Samoyed’s growing immune system. Thus, they feel their best as they reach their full potential.

SmartBlend even has a mother’s milk nutrient known as docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. This will keep your puppy’s brain and vision progressing well. With oatmeal and rice, you know you’re giving your Samoyed puppy something they’ll want to eat several times a day. You can even shop for a bag that’s eight pounds if you order through Amazon. That should get you through for a while!

Nutro Wholesome Essentials Natural Puppy Dry Food

If you’d prefer to not even mimic a raw diet with your Samoyed puppy’s food, then give this next pick a try. It’s Nutro’s dry food, an Amazon’s Choice product and a standard dry kibble.

You can get this Wholesome Essentials food in flavors like chicken or lamb. The chicken variety has vitamin E and antioxidants, both of which promote immune system health for your fluffy Sammy.

You’ll find DHA in this dog food as well as omega-3 fatty acids to improve your dog’s development and growth as they start the journey into adulthood. Their joints and bones will grow as well thanks to the calcium in this Nutro product. All the chicken used in the Wholesome Essentials food is farm-raised. One bag weighs a whopping 30 pounds!

Purina Pro Plan FOCUS Puppy Canned Wet Food

Another highly-rated pick on Amazon from Purina, their Pro Plan FOCUS is a wet food you might give your Samoyed instead of or with dry food. It comes in three flavors: chicken and rice, grain-free turkey, and grain-free chicken.

Not only does this canned food boost immune system health, just like Purina’s dry food, but the omega-6 fatty acids in the formula will improve your Samoyed’s lovely white coat, letting it grow healthy and soft. Their vision and brain will get healthier as well.

You can get a dozen cans, each one 13 ounces, with your Amazon order.

The Best Dog Food for Samoyed Adults

You’ve had several amazing years with your Samoyed, and they’re certainly fully grown adults now. What kinds of foods should you be giving them? I’m glad you asked.

Here are some picks to consider.

Acana Heritage Dry Dog Food with Red Meat

Although it’s a little expensive, Acana’s Heritage dog food is an Amazon’s Choice product. If you remember, it’s also what I feed Middle. This variety has red meat, but there are plenty of other types out there if your Sammy prefers them more.

This dog food, like all Acana products, is what they call biologically appropriate. It doesn’t contain any concentrates from plant proteins, gluten, potatoes, or grains. Instead, it has a 60:40 ratio of animal ingredients and fruits and veggies. Although this is the red meat formula, nearly half of the food (40 percent) has botanicals, fruits, and vegetables. The other 60 percent includes WholePrey ratios as well as dried, raw, and fresh animal ingredients.

Your Samoyed could even theoretically get this food into their senior years, as Acana mentions it’s designed for dogs of every age and life stage. The meats your Sammy will eat in each meal include grass-fed lamb, Yorkshire pork, and ranch-raised beef. You can shop bags in the following sizes: 4.5 pounds, 13 pounds, and 25 pounds.

IAMS Proactive Health Adult MiniChunks Dry Dog Food

Another food designed for adult Samoyeds and other breeds is this one from IAMS. Their Proactive Health Adult MiniChunks is a dry food that contains rice and real chicken. You get the same antioxidants that keep your adult dog’s immune system healthy as well. The prebiotics and fiber also boost digestion.

All chicken in this IAMS food is farm-raised and authentic. The protein your pup receives from the chicken and other ingredients keeps their muscles healthy and strong. Amazon sells this dog food in several bag sizes: 3.3 pounds, seven pounds, 15 pounds, and 30 pounds.

Hill’s Science Diet Dry Dog Food

Another food you might consider for your adult Samoyed is Hill’s Science Diet. This preferred pick is an Amazon’s Choice product. You can get it in delicious chicken flavor sure to make your Samoyed quite happy.

The natural ingredients used in this dog food include nutrients and vitamins such as omega-6 fatty acids and vitamin E. These can both improve the skin and coat of your Samoyed. With a digestible formula, you’ll find your Sammy’s stools don’t stick to their fur, or anywhere else for that matter. Also, your dog will absorb nutrients much better. The prebiotic fiber also helps to this end, improving your dog’s gut microbiome.

The Best Dog Food for Samoyed Seniors

When your Samoyed reaches their senior years, you have to switch up their diet one more time. Here are three products that would suit their changing bodies.

Purina ONE SmartBlend Vibrant Maturity Dog Food

If your puppy ate Purina ONE, then continue giving it to them in their senior years with SmartBlend Vibrant Maturity. This dry food, meant for dogs at least seven years or older, comes in yummy chicken flavor.

The ingredients in the formula will increase your older dog’s energy and their mental sharpness. The kibble has a crunchy texture with bits of meat loaded with protein. Like you’d expect, this dog food contains real chicken only. This promotes healthier muscles and heart in senior Sammies.

You can get the SmartBlend Vibrant Maturity food in an eight-pound, 16.5-pound, and 31.1-pound bag.

Nulo Senior Grain-Free Dog Food

Another dog food for older pups, Nulo’s senior grain-free dog food has sweet potato and trout for a tasty meal your Samoyed will love eating each day. The included BC30 probiotic comes patented to boost your dog’s metabolism regulation, food digestion, and to promote their gut flora (the good kind).

The L-carnitine in the formula not only improves your older dog’s stamina, but their weight as well. If you have an overweight older dog, this food makes for a great choice. With chondroitin and glucosamine, your Samoyed’s joints are protected from inflammation. Those dogs that feel sore after a long day might have slightly less pain. Also, their joints will be more flexible, making it easier to get around.

Although Nulo’s food contains lots of protein from animal sources (up to 80 percent), it’s still a low-carb product that won’t balloon up your Samoyed’s weight. Those animal proteins give your pup amino acids for better health.

Another thing this dog food formula goes without? Grains. You won’t find any grains from tapioca, white potatoes, soy, wheat, or corn here. Nulo also doesn’t put in preservatives, flavorings, and artificial colors into their foods. You can feel good about giving it to your Samoyed.

Nutro Max Natural Adult Dry Food Senior Recipe

Our last pick for senior pups is yet another one from Nutro. This formula, although familiar, has a senior recipe. You can select from flavors like lamb, chicken, and beef for your older Samoyed to savor.

For a health boost, Nutro’s dog food will improve your Samoyed’s digestion, immune system, coat, and skin. If your Sammy can’t quite eat dry food like they once could, then mix some of this Nutro dog food in with your favorite wet food and stir.

All poultry and meat that goes into the product comes from responsible sources so your Samoyed gets the most nutrients and health benefits. You’ll never find preservatives, artificial flavors, or artificial colors in this food, either. It also comes without soy protein, wheat, corn, or chicken byproduct meal.

The standard bag size is 25 pounds, which should provide more than enough for your Samoyed!

How Do You Decide Which Food to Give Your Samoyed?

With so many options both on this list and at any grocery or pet store, you might feel overwhelmed. How do you possibly pick the right food for your Sammy?

Make sure you follow these guidelines, which come courtesy of the American Kennel Club:

• Check that the dog food in question meets the requirements of being a balanced and complete food according to the Association of American Feed Control Officials or AAFCO. Such a food will say it meets or passes the requirements of AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles.

• Read the ingredients list especially carefully. If your Samoyed has allergies or certain dietary requirements, then it’s crucial you triple-check all ingredients before offering the food to your dog.

• Learn to understand what product names really refer to. If a dog food says it’s a “chicken platter,” “chicken entrée,” “chicken dinner,” or the like, then don’t expect a whole lot of chicken. In fact, it may have 10 percent or under of the poultry in the dog food. Just using the word “chicken” refers to a food where, of all the ingredients, chicken comprises at least 70 percent. Beware, though. If a dog food label says “with chicken,” that’s even worse than a “chicken entrée.” The phrase “with chicken” describes a food that has roughly three percent or less of chicken in the product.

Related Questions

Q: How much do you need to feed a puppy?

A: Puppies have voracious appetites, Samoyeds not excluded. Their bodies are also growing in every way, as we said, so they need fuel and calories to support that growth. Thus, for the first four, sometimes six months of their lives, you need to give them food on three separate occasions each day.

For each pound of dog food, you’d feed an adult Sammy, your puppy needs 2x that amount. Now, you’re probably wondering, isn’t that excessive? Won’t my Samoyed get fat? No. Again, your dog is growing. That said, this generous feeding schedule doesn’t go on forever.

Also, if your dog has gained a lot of weight, it’s time to cut back on what you give them. If that doesn’t help, I recommend getting in touch with your vet and seeing what they can do to get your dog’s weight under control.

Q: Which foods are absolutely off-limits to dogs?

A: While the raw diet has a lot of foods in which to give your dog, that doesn’t mean you can feed your Samoyed just anything. Far from it. Them and other breeds must not eat the following foods:

• Excessive salt, as it can cause liver, heart, and kidney issues

• Fatty and sweet treats, which could contribute to dogs developing pancreatitis

• Raw yeast dough, like the yeast, can, unfortunately, rise within the digestive system of the dog; this can trigger volvulus, gastric dilation, or even stomach rupturing

• Lactose sources, including milk, as even dogs can have lactose intolerance; this may cause diarrhea and/or vomiting

• Citrus fruits, especially oranges, limes, lemons, and grapefruits; this too can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, and, in some instances, even central nervous system depression

• Garlic and onions, as onions can cause anemia, the rupturing of red blood cells, and red blood cell oxidation due to their toxicity

• Chocolate, another toxic food to avoid under all circumstances

Q: Is the raw diet suitable for a senior Samoyed?

A: When we think about dogs on the raw diet, it’s typically young, hungry pups, right? That doesn’t mean that you have to stop feeding your Samoyed a raw diet once they reach their golden years. If you decide to do so because of bacteria or any other reason, then that’s fine. Their age should not be a determining factor, though.

In fact, older dogs could use some vegetables and fruits included in their diet. Maybe you don’t buy dog food with these in them, but make sure you give your pup some greens nonetheless (and oranges and reds and yellows). Both veggies and fruits can combat constipation, an issue that a senior dog has more often than an adult one.

Plus, it’s possible to derive some fiber from certain veggies and fruits. Try canned pumpkin (plain, though, no added sugar), canned green beans or fresh ones (steam them), or even wheat bran.

Whether your senior Samoyed should chow down on foods like meat and bones will depend on the state of their health. You sometimes have to watch how much protein your canine companion gets, especially if they have kidney disease. With that condition, you have to cut down on protein instead of adding more to the diet.

If you’re still not sure if the raw diet would work for your senior Sammy, I again recommend taking them to the vet. Your veterinarian could even prescribe a specialty dog food formulated for seniors.

Should You Shave Your Samoyed or Just Trim and Groom Them?

Should You Shave Your Samoyed or Just Trim and Groom Them?

You should never shave your Samoyed, as you can accidentally destroy their coat. Sammies typically have an undercoat covered by an exterior layer of guard hair. The undercoat sheds when the seasons change, but the guard hair maintains itself. Their undercoat is their means of insulation from the cold. By shaving it, their undercoat cannot serve its primary purpose anymore. It can also take up to three years for the guard hair to grow back. Until it does, your Samoyed’s fur can get very wet and dirty fast since the undercoat isn’t made for much more than insulating. It’s much better to trim or groom the fur instead.
